Marvel moves forward with a Guardians of the Galaxy movie!

Here's a dirty little secret about those Iron Man movies everybody seems to love: Iron Man was barely an A-list character at the time those came out. Seriously. Yeah, he can be considered one of the major Marvel heroes, but his book struggled to sell and basically he was pretty irrelevant for a long time. Heck, Wonder Woman is considered one of DC's top three heroes and her book gets outsold by reprints by of Spider-Ham. Iron Man wasn't that much different, but the two flicks gave him a much higher profile, and now he is truly one of the most important characters both on screen and on the printed page. But Marvel has a ton of characters who could use a similar push. One of those is actually a team, with Twitch reporting that Marvel is moving ahead with a movie centered on the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last year we learned that Marvel was looking to take some of it's second string characters and create lower budgeted films for them. We've seen recent movement on Dr. Strange, and there'll no doubt be a Black Panther or Iron Fist movie some time in the future. Ant-Man, too. But Guardians is a niche comic if there ever was one. Basically they are a hodge podge team of intergalactic heroes who are charged with stopping universal threats before they happen. The series was created back in 1969 and took place in a parallel universe. The most recent version is much sleeker, much funnier, and very friggin' cool.  The team is led by Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, and of all things the team features two talking animals: Rocket Raccoon, Cosmo the Space Dog; and a talking plant creature named Groot. Weird, right?

No word on how things will work on the creative side of things, but I'll be curious to see who Marvel selects. After the space faring disaster that was Green Lantern, this is an odd approach to take, but one that could pay off in spades and take the Marvel cinematic universe in a totally different direction.
