Michelle Rodriguez returning for Resident Evil: Retribution

Say what you want about the never-ending run of Resident Evil movies, it's quietly become one of the longest running and profitable franchises ever. No, I'm not kidding. Paul W.S. Anderson has been able to produce these lousy zombie-ish flicks on the cheap, and they regular rake in over $100M, with the latest earning over $290M. That's crazy considering the series' beginnings as just another bad video game adaptation. Anderson, along with his wife and star Milla Jojovich, have managed to set the series apart and grow beyond the game's core audience. Gotta give credit where it's due.

With the success of RE: Afterlife, we knew almost immediately that another one would be on the fast track. Titled Resident Evil: Retribution, it sees the return of Anderson behind the camera for the first time since the fourth film, and according to hints dropped by Jojovich the story will deal with some of it's leftover plot points. Most of the cast will be back, including Boris Kodjoe and Sienna Guillory, but in a confusing twist some long thought dead characters are returning as well.

BloodyDisgusting has learned that Michelle Rodriguez, who starred in the first flick as Rain Campo, will be making an appearance. Campo got her ass seriously kicked in the first one, killed and turned into a zombie. If I remember right she then got killed all over again by Jojovich. Colin Salmon, who got diced up by a cross stitch of laser beams in the series' coolest moment, will be back as well. So what's going on? Where's Ali Larter, dammit??

Although I think the last film was probably the best yet, mainly because it got back to the core battle between Alice and her crew against the forces of Umbrella, I don't think we're looking at a prequel situation here. What's more likely is that Rodriguez and any other dead characters will be back as clones. Resident Evil helped solidify Rodriguez's reputation as the go-to gal for tough, sexy chick roles.  Need a recent example? Go check out Battle: Los Angeles, where she pumps lead into an invading alien force.

Resident Evil: Retribution  will hit theaters on September 14th 2012.
