Most people seem to be sorta lukewarm on the idea of Spike Lee tackling a remake of South Korean vengeance pic, Oldboy. I can understand that, even if I disagree with that assessment. But when it comes to Lee's other, far more personal project, Red Hook Summer, the consensus has been pure excitement. And that comes with almost no information on the film. In fact, the way Lee has played it so close to the vest has only stirred up more interest. All we know really is that it follows an Atlanta native's summer spent in the Brooklyn borough.
Lee isn't one to keep quiet long, though, especially if you follow him on Twitter. Recently he tweeted a clarification of sorts on the true nature of the film, which has him reprising his role as Mookie from 1989's Do the Right Thing, leading to speculation it was a sequel...
“Red Hook Summer is not a Sequel to Do The Right Thing and it has nothing to do with Brooklyn Loves MJ.Subject Matter?New Spike Lee Joint YO.”
Ok, pretty on point there. I'm guessing it has nothing to do with Brooklyn Loves MJ? Just a hunch. I'm also assuming we won't see Radio Raheem rising from the grave or anything, right? What would be cool is if he came back and gave an Ed Norton 25th Hour-style rant on the terrors of the Ipod.
Anyway, Blackfilm has also confirmed some of the casting, which Lee has been very careful to keep under wraps. So far the most recognizable name is Clarke Peters, who most will recognize as the brilliant Lester Freamon on The Wire. Nate Parker, Turron Kofi Alleyne, Samantha Ivers, Limary Agosto, Heather Simms and Kalon Jackson also co-star. What? Where's Spike's sister, Joie Lee? She's gotta be in here somewhere.
Red Hook Summer will be "burnin' up da summer" in 2012.
