While brief, the release of the trailer for The Deep Blue Sea is a cause for celebration. For one, it marks the feature return of director Terence Davies, whose presence has been missed since 2000's The House of Mirth. But also it appears to be the best shot for Rachel Weisz to make up for what has been a pretty lousy 2011 so far. The film has received glowing reviews coming out of the festival circuit, with Weisz in particular being a highlight.
Based on Terence Rattigan's stageplay romance, Weisz plays a woman dealing with guilt and sadness after she cheats on her husband with another man. Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale co-star, but based on this trailer Weisz looks to be the real stand out. This looks like prime Oscar bait, so I'd be shocked if it isn't scheduled for release in the coming weeks, but for now make due with this teaser...
