Universal sets their sights on a new Scarface movie

Yeah, you read that right. But I'm betting you aren't that shocked. I know I'm not. Let's face it, Scarface is one of the most recognizable films in history. It's a pop culture staple, with images of Al Pacino's Tony Montana still gracing t-shirts, posters, and video games. Rappers emulate it constantly. So it makes sense that Universal would want to cash in on arguably their most bankable film. Say hello to their little relaunch.

Deadline has the news, and they state pretty clearly this isn't intended to be a remake of either the great 1932 Howard Hawks film, or the vastly overrated 1983 Brian De Palma version every thug you know loves.  There are no writers attached yet, and no director on the horizon(Oliver Stone, maybe?). So this one is still very early in development. The story notes that the plan is to utilize the common elements of the two movies. So expect to see a guy rise to power to become the most powerful drug lord in the world, and totally unravel in a violent world of drugs, glamour, and excess. I'm betting they drop the whole "1980s Cuban refugee" thing, though. Call it a hunch.

Think about it. How much fun is the casting for this film going to be? Who will direct it? An established vet? Or a hot newcomer? Who do you think would make for a good, young Tony Montana?
