David Yates to direct big screen version of Dr. Who

I won't even begin to pretend that I'm some sort of Dr. Who expert. Geek though I may be, I've always looked at Dr. Who as one of those things that separates the nerd men from the nerd boys. There are some people I know who swear by it, putting it above the likes of Star Trek and Star Wars on the sci-fi totem pole. Considering it's been around since 1963 and has seen eleven different dudes play The Doctor, it's arguably more popular now than it's ever been. For the BBC, it seems like a no brainer to try and adapt it for the big screen, just as it's a no brainer the right man to helm it.

David Yates, the man behind the last four Harry Potter films, will be the man behind the camera for a film reboot of Dr. Who, which follows a crazy smart alien in human form, who travels across time and space saving civilizations, battling enemies, etc. He's always accompanied by a number of companions, and I think always has one who tends to be a hot chick. The current version stars Matt Smith as the Doctor, with Stephen Moffat(The Adventures of Tintin) serving as showrunner.

It's still very early days on this one, as Yates says writers are being looked for now. He won't be piggy backing off the extensive history of Dr. Who, either, creating an all-new continuity for the big screen. Probably a wise move, but one that may bug some of the die hard fans. I don't think anybody wants a dumbed down Dr. Who. Then again, Yates handled the wonky Harry Potter continuity just fine, so there's no reason to think he can't do the same here. We probably won't see it hit screens until maybe 2015, so hopefully in the meantime he can get crackin' on that Fables adaptation that's been in the works forever. [Variety]
