With the announcement of the 2012 Golden Globes nominees, silent film The Artist continues it's stranglehold on the awards season. The critical darling racked up six nominations to lead the pack, including Best Picture Comedy/Musical, Best Director for Michael Hazavinicius, and Best Screenplay. Right behind it with five nominations was Alexander Payne's The Descendants and this summer's comedy hit, The Help.
George Clooney received three nods, two for The Ides of March which has been relatively quiet on the circuit so far. Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Actor for 'March' rather than Drive, which is a definite shock. Joseph Gordon-Levitt snuck in with his performance in 50/50, which is a very good sign the actor may finally be getting the recognition he deserves. The same goes for Kristen Wiig, nominated for this year's funniest film, Bridesmaids. It's good to see Owen Wilson receiving some recognition in the Best Actor Comedy/Musical category for his turn in Midnight in Paris.
On the surprise front, Steven Spielberg got snubbed in the Best Director category, although I personally wouldn't have put him in, he's just sortof expected to be there. And there was nothing for Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, although I suspect we'll be hearing more from it when the Academy Awards nominations are announced. Let's just hope they don't pull a stunt like nominating the film's child star, Thomas Horn. I'd much rather see Tom Hanks get a supporting nod. The winners will be announced on January 15th.
