JJ Abrams adds Robocop to Star Trek sequel

Maybe Peter Weller is too old to slip into the Robocop suit he wore so well back in the 1980s, but he could still make a heck of a Starfleet officer. The veteran actor is the latest new addition to the cast of J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek flick, joining Benicio Del Toro and Alice.

Weller hasn't been around on screen very much lately, having spent a good part of last year on the Showtime series, Dexter. The last film I saw him in was the lousy straight-to-DVD monster flick, Prey, which starred Bridget Moynahan. He'd probably want me to forget that.

As for his role? Pfft! Who can say? This is an "Abrams Joint", so everything's under lock and key right now. I'm assuming he'll be some grizzled officer in Starfleet with a couple of harsh words for Captain Kirk or something. This won't be Weller's first time in the Star Trek universe, either, as he appeared in a couple of Star Trek: Enterprise episodes a few years ago. So in other words the guy knows how to phaser the hell out of somebody if he has to.

Star Trek 2 will start production early next year for a planned May 17th 2013 release. [Variety]
