New names emerge to play Khan in Star Trek sequel

Now that the dust has settled and we know that Benicio Del Toro not only won't be playing Khan in Star Trek 2 but he won't even be on the damn set, it's time for to get back to the business of rumor mongering about it. Two new names have emerged for the role of playing Captain Kirk's "greatest" nemesis, one is pretty cool, the other makes me cringe.

Edgar Ramirez and Jordi Molla are said to be in the running for the role. Ramirez is apparently the lead choice, for obvious reasons. The actor has been on a steady ascent to stardom for a couple of years now, starting with his epic performance last year in Carlos. He's someone who a lot of people have been keeping an eye on since Domino back in 2005, and with his upcoming role in Wrath of the Titans his time appears to be now.  Molla, on the other hand, has been associated with a lot of crappy movies, and he's been a major reason why they've sucked. His name might not ring any bells, but you'll recognize his face. Earlier this year he was a part of the tepid Zoe Saldana action flick, Colombiana. Last you might have spotted him in Knight and Day, that is if you stopped covering your eyes enough to notice. Don't even get me started on Bad Boys II.

With production set to begin next month, JJ Abrams has to be in a rush to get this part locked down. Ramirez will be testing in the next day or so, and we'll probably know soon the results not long after. Star Trek 2 is set to beam down on May 17th 2013. [Variety]
