Trailer Time: .hack//The Movie

Wow. The new trailer for .hack//The Movie, based on the hit anime and video game phenomenon, has been released and it's a thing of pure CGI beauty. Directed by series vet Hiroshi Matsuyama, the story is set in the not too distant future where children have lived their entire lives in a world completely connected by networks. Sora Yuki, a 14 year old girl with no interest in video games, is convinced by her friends to enter the popular game called "The World", but when strange things start happening within it, they begin to have an impact on the real world.

Not a terribly inventive plot by anime standards, as they've been doing this sort of social commentary on the world's reliance on technology for years. Summer Wars is a prime recent example. But .hack is an institution, and the diehards have to love the video game style CG animation at use here. Not quite as refined as Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was, clearly aiming for a more bashful, childlike look to the characters. I love it, and hope we get to see it here in the US. For now, it's set to open in Japan on January 21st....
