'The Last Exorcism' sequel scares up a director

See? This is why people hate Hollywood. When you call something The Last Exorcism, you can't very well go and make a sequel! Actually, this is one I'm pretty happy about, because the 2010 film which starred Patrick Fabian as a priest looking to expose exorcisms as a scam turned out to be the best the genre's seen in years. It made a good deal of money, too, around $70M on a $2M budget. That'll get you a sequel greenlit every time.

Deadline reports that the ball is now rolling on the follow-up, and rather than bringing back Daniel Stamm to direct, it'll be Ed Gass-Donnelly(Small Town Murder Songs) behind the camera. Horror maestro Eli Roth is back to produce, with Ashley Bell expected to return as the demon possessed Nell Sweetzer. Considering the last film's explosive finale, it'll be interesting to see where the story goes. All we know is that it picks up three months after that fiery event.

Here's hoping the recent "f*ck you, America!" that was The Devil Inside doesn't sour people on exorcism movies for good. Although I have to admit to being a little wary. Different director, different writer in Danielle Chazelle, and they'll be moving from a PG-13 rating up an R. I hope we don't lose some of the psychological stuff that worked so well the last time just for a chance to show a little more blood and gore.

These movies don't take long to make, so look for The Last Exorcism 2 to land late this year.
