3. Twister/Poseidon/The Perfect Storm[Triple Feature]
Let's face it, none of these movies are total gems. In the case of Poseidon, it's really one soaking wet disaster. But there's something to be said about the depictions of mother nature's sheer ferocity in Twister and The Perfect Storm, and how those people brave(stupid?) enough to challenge that strength are taught an invaluable lesson. If only Werner Herzog could've directed them both. Still, Jan de Bont and Wolfgang Peterson set the special effects bar pretty high, and deserved all the awards acclaim they received for these two technical marvels.
2. The Guard
A fan of Martin McDonagh's foul-mouthed, off-kilter hitman flick, In Bruges? Then chances are The Guard is right up your alley as well. The debut feature of John Michael McDonagh(yep, Martin's bro!), the equally crass and politically incorrect crime comedy features Brendan Gleeson(another In Bruges alum) as a small town cop with a loose interpretation of justice, forced to team up with a straight laced agent(Don Cheadle) to solve a murder. Profanity fueled, hilarious comedy, and a wealth of memorable characters both big and small make The Guard a must-see.
1. Contagion
Y'see that face Gwyneth Paltrow is making on the DVD sleeve for Steven Soderbergh's Contagion? That's pretty much the look I had the entire film. Contagion is the scariest thing I saw all year, an all too real look at the world's readiness(or lack thereof) in the event of a viral pandemic. All I wanted to do afterwards was move into my own personal plastic bubble and bathe in Purell. A horror in every sense of the word, the virus seems to evolve and oppose those at the CDC fighting to put a stop to it's spread. Nobody in the all-star cast is safe, which is perhaps the most gut wrenchingly real aspect of the film, as those we usually expect to be heroes fall by the wayside.
