Sony confirms development on 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' sequels
I think Sony was pretty much all in for the entire trilogy the moment they picked up the rights to Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy. Even though David Fincher's film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, hasn't exactly set the world on fire, it's doing respectable business and appears to have long legs. With a budget hovering around $100M, it's taken in about $60M so far, and has yet to break most international territories. I have a feeling it'll find some tough sledding on the foreign market, where the Swedish films proved to be wildly popular and are only about two years old.
So with 'Tattoo' doing just well enough, it comes as no surprise that Sony has revealed it's plan to move ahead with plans for the sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire, telling EW that the first film "continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book". Just a few weeks ago, a report stated that the next two movies would be shot in the next 12-18 months, adding weight to the idea of them shooting back-to-back. Steve Zaillian has already been brought in to pen the sequel script, so it shouldn't take Sony long to kick production into high gear at a moment's notice. The only possible conflict could be Daniel Craig's schedule, but he and Rooney Mara are locked in for all three movies so if Sony wants them, they will be there.
While I wasn't totally sold on the necessity of Fincher's film, there's no denying it was his directorial guidance that made it a success. Right now he's not guaranteed to return as director, and considering the amount of stuff on his plate I'd be surprised he came back. But Sony has to realize what a tenuous property they have here, and the loss of Fincher could be a crushing blow. I think they'll do whatever it takes to make sure he comes back happy.
