The Sunday Drive: 1/1/12

Wow, it's been a few weeks since I've done this. While I shake off the rust, recognize that my #4 probably would be The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a film that confirms David Fincher's razor sharp talents but lacks a compelling mystery at it's core. See it for Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, and to get yourself primed for the much more interesting sequels.

3. The Artist
Is it still possible that a movie can more to say than your average Hollywood blockbuster, without the actors uttering a word of dialogue? In the case of The Artist, the answer is a resounding "Yes!" Michael Hazanavicius has lovingly put together a wonderful ode to the 1920s silent movie era, a joyful treat and proof the old filmmaking ways still have power and value.

2. Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol
This was on my list two weeks ago, and it remains to me the best action movie of 2011. A huge, widescreen, masterpiece that demands you experience it in IMAX, there has been no better installment of the franchise than this.I've come around to believing it's actually better than the first.
1. We Bought A Zoo
The perfect film to ring in the new year is Cameron Crowe's heartwarming, enduring story of love, overcoming loss, and the fixing of frayed familial bonds. Easily, 'Zoo' could've slipped into being too saccharine sweet or cloying for it's own good, but Crowe walks the emotional balance perfectly. Your heart will be tugged, tears will be jerked, but Crowe tackles the issue of grief with equal amounts of humor and personal adventure. A remarkable achievement, and by far my favorite Crowe film since Almost Famous.

DVD Pick of the Week: A Good Old Fashioned Orgy
Maybe it was the title that drove people away, similar to Zack and Miri Make a Porno? Because there's really no other explanation I can give as to why this didn't gain any traction this year. Other than Bridesmaids, it's the funniest R-rated comedy of the year and by far the sexiest and raunchiest. Featuring a superb ensemble cast including Jason Sudeikis, Lucy Punch, Nick Kroll, Tyler Labine, Lake Bell, and Martin Starr, the story centers on a group of old college friends who throw wild parties every single weekend. When they're forced to close up shop, they decided to go out with a bang. Well, multiple gangs, if you catch my drift, and put their friendship to the ultimate test by throwing an orgy. Old romances and feuds flare up, love triangles are begun and broken, and some discover they're a lot more "open" to the idea than they ever would've thought.
