Has Tony Kaye done enough to warrant the trailer of his latest film ending with the tagline "A Tony Kaye Talkie"? Eh, probably not. Chances are you don't even recognize who the hell Tony Kaye is, but he was once a potential superstar director after American History X, but various issues made him persona non grata in Hollywood. Now the hope is that his latest school room drama, Detachment, can be the film that puts him back on people's radars.
The latest trailer has been released, and to me it's far better than the one we received last month. The central figure is a substitute teacher played by Adrien Brody, who struggles with his own issues while working at a poor inner city high school. At this stage it doesn't look like just another "white man saves poor students" flick, and appears to be more of a character study of the type of person who even wants to be a teacher nowadays. You don't get a cast with James Caan, Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu, the ever present Bryan Cranston, Blythe Danner, Marcia Gay Harden, Tim Blake Nelson, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and William Peteson unless the script has some meat to it.
After premiering at Tribeca last year, Detachment will be available on ITunes next month, before getting a small theatrical push on March 16th. Check out the trailer below....
