We could be waiting another four years for an 'Avatar' sequel

The last thing I remember hearing about James Cameron's Avatar sequels, other than stuff about Sigourney Weaver coming back into the fold, was that we could probably expect to see the first one in December 2014, with the final leg of the trilogy to land about a year later. We haven't heard much regarding the script, and with the heavy amount of production that would need to take place, there should be more information coming out about a potential start date. There might be a good reason for all the silence.

BleedingCool had a chance to talk to talk to producer Jon Landau, who said that the first sequel is still "four years away". So that would be in 2016, meaning we wouldn't see the third film until probably 2017. He may be fudging the time a little bit to leave some elbow room, but that's a long time to wait, even for a follow-up to the highest grossing film of all time.

Expect the next two movies to be shot back-to-back, and feature even more advanced technology(such as an increased framerate) than their groundbreaking predecessor.  The majority of the principle cast, including Sam Worthington, Weaver, and Zoe Saldana are all expected to return.
