Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lee Byung-hun join 'Red' sequel

Red turned out to be a huge hit for involved, and really capitalized on the whole "butt kicking old folks" thing that Liam Neeson kicked off with Taken. Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Morgan Freeman starred as four ex-CIA agents targeted for assassination by their former employers. Why? Because they're old and expendable. It was a lot of fun, and cleared something like $200M, far bigger than many would have thought. The sequel has been in the works ever since, and now we're finally starting to hear about new additions to the party.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lee Byung-hun(Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe: Retaliation) have joined the film in unspecified roles. I'm going to assume Byung-hun is a bad guy, while Zeta-Jones would make for a heck of a sexy villainess. We don't really know anything about the plot, though, it's probably going to involve more globe-trotting running 'n gunning. All of the surviving key players will return, including Mary Louise Parker, who was fantastic as Willis' sorta girlfriend. Nothing yet on Karl Urban and Brian Cox, although I'd expect the latter to be asked back considering his character's unresolved issues with Mirren. The first film was based on the Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner comic, and since there were no true sequels this will have to be an original story.

Previous writers Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the script, with Dean Parisot(Galaxy Quest) replacing Robert Schwentke as director. Red 2 is due to open on August 2nd 2013. [Deadline]
