Without a doubt, the box office grudge match of the year is going to come down to The Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises, two vastly different superhero movies at totally different ends of their life cycle. With Marvel's all-star effort at over $1B and not showing any serious signs of slowing down, Christopher Nolan and the boys at Warner Brothers have their work cut out for them if they have a hope of coming close to matching it.
This new poster, featuring Batman(Christian Bale) backed by a flaming bat silhouette certainly invokes the image of a phoenix rising from the ashes, which is pretty much what the Gotham crusader will be doing as he squares off against Bane(Tom Hardy), deals with Catwoman(Anne Hathaway), and possibly even more enemies we don't know about.
As for the box office race, it's pretty clear that Warner Brothers isn't really all that concerned by it, which is why they've taken such a relaxed approach to pushing the film. The Dark Knight managed to pull in a hefty $1B by the end of its run, and you can pretty much bank on The Dark Knight Rises doing even better. So really, those competitive geeks at Marvel and DC are both going to have plenty to crow about when all is said and done. The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20th.
