It was way back in June of 2010 that we first heard of plans for Paul Reubens and Judd Apatow to team-up on a brand new film starring the world's most overgrown child, Pee-Wee Herman. Personally, I never fully bought into the story back then, even with the Pee-Wee character coming on like gangbusters on stage and his HBO special. But despite my doubts, the film has progressed along slowly, with Reubens and Paul Rust(I Love You, Beth Cooper) co-writing. Apatow wouldn't be directing, but is on board as a producer and obviously, a little bit of name brand muscle.
Now we're getting an update from Reubens on the film's status, and he reveals to ComingSoon we may be seeing it sooner than expected....
"That's any minute, supposedly," he said. "...It's going great. We have a meeting this coming week. We just did a very quick little rewrite on it. As far as I know it's getting shot very soon."
He also said that part of the reason we've heard next to nothing about it for so long was that he wasn't supposed to have been talking about it in the first place, and let the cat out of the bag way too early. We still don't know who will direct, but I wouldn't count on it being Tim Burton, who helmed the classic Pee-Wee's Big Adventure back in 1985. Randal Kleiser bears much of the responsibility for 1988's Big Top Pee-Wee, so if you know where he lives, toss an egg at his house for me.
Reubens plans on following up the film with two "incredible" projects, hinting that one would be some sort of reality show. We talkin' "America's Next Pee-Wee Herman"?
