The first clip from Lee Daniels' 'The Paperboy'

It's been a busy day for Lee Daniels news, as we just finished learning about a trio of actors who are circling his upcoming civil rights drama, The Butler. One of those names on the list was Matthew McConaughey, who appears to be continuing his streak of top notch work. It's not clear what role McConaughey would play in that film, but what does seem evident is that he must've had a pretty good time working with Daniels on The Paperboy, and now we get to see a taste of what that collaboration looks like.

The first clip from The Paperboy has been released, and it features John Cusack as a Florida Death Row inmate having rather intense conversation with McConaughey's newspaper journalist who has made it his mission to clear the man's name. The story is based on Pete Dexter's sexy, retro crime novel, and was developed by producer Pedro Almodovar for nearly ten years before Daniels took over. Unfortunately we don't get a look at Nicole Kidman as Cusack's lover, who will say or do anything to help his cause. Nor do we see Zac Efron, playing McConaughey's slacker brother who gets in way too deep with her.

Overall, I like the look of the scene. Daniels has never been a very exciting director stylistically, but it may work with this sort of material. I'm curious to see more, and that's always a good thing. The Paperboy will debut at Cannes in the next few days, and since this is titled "Clip 4", I'm guessing we'll see more footage before then....[RopesofSilicon]
