Trailer Time: Oscar-nominated 'A Cat in Paris'

It's hard to argue that GKIDS, an American distributor based in New York, has had phenomenal success in taking foreign animated films and bringing them to great acclaim on our shores. Granted, nobody ever actually hears of their movies until after they get nominated for Academy Awards, but the point is that they're nominated at all. A couple of years ago they gave us the Irish film, The Secret of Kells. This year alone they had two in the Best Animated Feature category: the acclaimed Chico & Rita; and A Cat in Paris.  Chico & Rita actually did quite well during its brief run here, boosted by the Oscar nomination, and now A Cat in Paris is about to get a turn starting on June 1st.

The French film was directed by Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol, and follows a black cat who kinda exists on both sides of the law. At night, the cat follows and aids a cat burglar in his crimes. During the day, it hangs around a mother and police inspector who is investigating the murder of her husband.

The animation is definitely unique, angular in a way that evokes a painting in a museum. Whether or not it deserved to beat out The Adventures of Tintin for a nomination will have to figured out later. Check out the trailer for A Cat in Paris below....
