1st teaser trailer for Takashi Miike's 'Lesson of the Evil'
It's Takashi Miike, folks, and that means he's probably finished another film in the time it took me to type this sentence. The prolific Japanese director has been mixing things up for years now, ranging from the awesome video game adaptation Ace Attorney(my review here) to a pair of samurai movies in 13 Assassins and Hara-Kiri. It's been awhile since he's taken on the horror genre, though, which is why I was so excited when he signed on to direct Lesson of the Evil back in March.
With the film now wrapped up, we're getting our first teaser trailer and while it's totally in Japanese, the gist is pretty clear. Based on Yusuke Kishi's bestselling manga, Lesson of the Evil follows a beloved teacher who is secretly a sociopath, unable to feel empathy for anyone else. As a means of coping, he deals with bullying, bad parents, and other school issues in the only way he knows how: by murdering his students. The trailer's final image appears to be a direct riff on Battle Royale, which I'm guessing wasn't an accident.
A Japanese release is planned for November, so here's hoping this gets a bigger run here in America than Ace Attorney did. Check out the teaser below....
