Tops at the Box Office: 'The Dark Knight Rises' scores biggest 2D opening ever

1. The Dark Knight Rises- $160.9M
Well, I know everybody is saying it but it bears repeating: talking about The Dark Knight Rises' box office numbers after the recent shooting is trivial as all Hell. But it's impossible to ignore that it looks to have had an impact. After an incredible $30M at midnight screenings, the early estimates had the film pegged for a weekend that could threaten The Avengers' record breaking debut, but the Saturday and Sunday numbers leveled off sharply. Can't really blame anybody, in particular families, for deciding to wait a few extra days in light of the situation. The opening is still the largest ever for a 2D film, and the third highest overall, trailing behind The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 2. Internationally the film did gangbusters as well, for a final worldwide tally equally $249M. Despite the bittersweet news, Warner Brothers has to at least be pleased by these numbers, and 'A' Cinema Score means we can probably expect the film to own the rest of the summer on its way into the record books.
2. Ice Age: Continental Drift- $20.4M/$88.8M
Studios didn't bother even trying to counter-program against Batman's onslaught, so all we have left are films from the previous week. The fourth Ice Age film has now moved up to $529M worldwide, guaranteeing more frosty fun will be on the way.
3. The Amazing Spider-Man- 10.8M/$228.6M
4. Ted- $10M/$180.4M
5. Brave- $6M/$208.7M
6. Magic Mike- $4.3M/$102M
Inches its way over $100M, the third for Channing Tatum and making that sequel all the more likely.
7. Savages- $3.4M/$40M
8. Madea's Witness Protection- $2.25M/$60.3M
9. Moonrise Kingdom- $1.8M/$36.1M
10. To Rome With Love- $1.4M/$11.1M
