Gerard Butler shoots and misses in the 'Playing for Keeps' trailer

Gerard Butler knows a thing about soccer. He also knows a thing or two about soccer movies, having starred in 2005's The Game of Their Lives. Unfortunately, he also knows more than almost anybody about really awful comedies. So put those two things together and you should get at least a mediocre soccer dramedy in Playing for Keeps, right?  Not judging by this trailer you don't!

Directed by the wildly inconsistent Gabriele Muccino(The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds), Butler stars as an ex-soccer pro who gains the attention of all the town soccer moms while coaching his son's Little League team. Of course he has an ex-wife, played by Jessica Biel, who he's trying unsuccessfully to get back in with, while Catherine Zeta-Jones is seriously on the prowl. She may even be able to land him that sportscasting gig he's been angling for.

Not exactly new territory being covered here, and the trailer really seems to be all over the map. Is it trying to be a romantic comedy? An inspirational sports drama? Or just another story of a middle aged single father pining for his glory years and forgetting his family in the process? Eh, probably a little bit of everything. Looks kinda dreadful, really, and I doubt Uma Thurman, Judy Greer, and Dennis Quaid as supporting players can fix it. Playing for Keeps(formerly Playing the Field) hits theaters on December 7th....
