Clint Eastwood plays ball in the trailer for 'Trouble with the Curve'

Considering the way NBC ran it into the ground during these Olympics, Philip Phillips' 'Home' is never going to have quite the same impact. It's used as the score for the newly released trailer for Trouble with the Curve, Clint Eastwood's first film in front of the camera since Gran Torino, and he's again playing a cranky, crotchety old man watching the times pass him by. Only this time it's the stats and numbers and computers that make up today's Major League Baseball scouting, putting out to pasture old school scouts like him who went by their gut and intuition.

Sound a little bit like a reverse Moneyball? Well, then you'd be right, and but there's a lot more here that makes this film look like the sort of quiet, late season gem that may surprise some folks. Eastwood's character is losing his eyesight, yet heads off on one final scouting trip with his tough as nails daughter(Amy Adams) to check out a prized prospect, with the two hoping to mend a few fences on the way. So what we get is a lot of Eastwood seething through gritted teeth, Adams looking saintly and earnest as usual, and even a little bit of Justin Timberlake as a young scout looking to learn the ropes...while also mackin' on Adams a little bit.

Probably not going to be an Oscar contender, but with Eastwood making a rare appearance in front of the camera, it's hard not to be looking forward to seeing how Trouble with the Curve plays out. What do you think? Home run? Or maybe a ground-rule double?  Robert Larenz is directing, with a release set for September 21st....
