New clip from 'The Master'; P.T. Anderson reveals additional details

If there's one good thing about the slow rollout of The Master, which is about to hit San Francisco's Castro Theater later tonight, it's that it offers plenty of time for the controversial film's cast and director to discuss what the long production process was like. Unfortunately, most involved with it have remained tight-lipped, with the exception of Philip Seymour Hoffman repeatedly stating that the the film has nothing to do with Scientology.

He may have been telling the truth, or at least as he sees it. In a recent Newsweek article, director Paul Thomas Anderson revealed that Hoffman's character, Lancaster Dodd, is indeed inspired by Scientology charlatan founder, L. Ron Hubbard, but The Master is far from a straight up hit piece on the religion....

Anderson: "I didn’t want it to be a biography. It’s not the L. Ron Hubbard story. That was a hook you could hang your hat on… [But] I was naive. I should have known that’s what people would latch onto. I’m much more defensive and protective of [Scientology] than I would have thought."

The story notes that Hubbard is only one piece of The Master's puzzle, and just part of the many influences Anderson tapped into when creating the film. He also reworked and reused some scenes from There Will Be Blood, which will be interesting to try and spot. It's a great piece Newsweek ran, so you'll definitely want to check it out if you're as eagerly awaiting The Master as many of us are.

Speaking of "eagerly awaiting", a new clip has been released which serves only to boost the already red hot anticipation. Looking like it could be the first scene in the film, it shows troubled WWII vet Freddie Quell(Joaquin Phoenix) racing around a pier claiming that he "lost" his ship. Maybe it's me, but that sun in the background is looking extra gorgeous, like everything in this scene does. Best to check The Master out in 70mm when it opens nationwide on September 14th....
