New trailer for musical comedy 'The Sapphires', starring Chris O'Dowd

Sparkle may not be the only film based on The Supremes to hit theaters this year, and if the trailer for The Sapphires is any indication, it may not be the best, either. There's a reason why The Weinstein Company scooped up the rights to the film after it debuted at Cannes and have been holding on tight to it ever since. With a showing at Toronto right around the corner, we could be looking at it thrown into the late season awards season mix, and star Chris O'Dowd getting a Best Actor push.

That's right, Chris O'Dowd, the guy from Gulliver's Travels and the cop from Bridesmaids. In The Sapphires he plays a talent scout who discovers four black Australian aboriginal girls and fashions them into his own version of The Supremes. The film is set in 1968 during the Vietnam War, and the girls first gig is a daunting one as they're tasked with performing for the troops. The musical numbers sound great, and O'Dowd appears to be giving a stand-out turn in a rare dramatic role. The film is based on a true story, taken from the stageplay by Tony Briggs, which she based on the life of her mother. Briggs also co-wrote the screenplay, with Wayne Blair directing.

I'm curious to see what TWC does with the film, and if they have greater plans for it. Movies like this that balance social issues, major historical events, and a touch of humor tend to play well this time of year. Check out the trailer for The Sapphires below....
