'Safe House' sequel in the works over at Universal
Safe House turned out to be a solid early season hit for Universal, and a welcome Hollywood introduction for Swedish director, Daniel Espinosa. The film starred Denzel Washington, who carried along a bland Ryan Reynolds, in a fairly standard actioner that earned just north of $200M. Normally that's just enough to have studios talking sequel, and that looks to be the direction Universal is headed.
THR reports that a Safe House sequel is in the works right now, with original writer David Guggenheim currently working on the script. The first film followed a CIA operative(Reynolds) in a go nowhere assignment managing a safe house, who sees his world turned upside down when a former agent turned terrorist(Washington) is brought in for custody, with practically every merc and hitman on the planet wanting him dead.
Universal apparently has hopes of reuniting Reynolds and Washington, which is weird because the latter's character didn't exactly survive the experience. Then again he was a pretty slick dude so maybe he was faking? Eh, whatever. No word on if Espinosa will be back, but I'd think he'd prefer to move on to bigger things. Besides, this is the type of flick that is perfect for a newbie talent looking to make a name for himself.
