Sure Shots: 'Red 2'; Tobey Maguire; Tom Wilkinson

* David Thewlis will probably always be recognized for playing professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter movies, but he's about to jump aboard another hit franchise. He'll play an information dealer nicknamed The Frog in Red 2, joining Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Mary Louise Parker in the sequel to the hit action comedy. He joins a bunch of new additions to the cast with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Neal McDonough, and Lee Byung-hun part of the Dean Parisot-directed film. Red 2 is set to open on August 2nd 2013. [THR]

* Tobey Maguire is looking to jump into the world of animation by teaming up with Fox Animation and Wedgeworks to bring Doug TenNapel's imaginative graphic novel, Cardboard, to the silver screen. Maguire will produce through his Material Picturs shingle, and may voice one of the lead characters. The comic is actually really cool, and follows a boy who is given an ordinary cardboard box as a gift from his father. They decide to make the best of the situation and bend the box to resemble a man, which magically springs to life and draws the attention of a neighborhood bully with evil plans. Chris Wedge(Ice Age) and TenNapel will co-produce. with Wedge directing. I don't much care for TenNapel as a person because I think he's a mouth-breathing homophobe, but the guy has a unique creative vision that makes this a project worth following. TenNapel is responsible for creating the popular Earthworm Jim character. [Variety]

* Tom Wilkinson(The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) has joined the crime thriller Felony, which will be written, produced, and stars Joel Edgerton in the lead role. The film actually sounds pretty nifty, with Edgerton playing a cop who gets drunk after a post-bust celebration and accidentally runs someone off the road. As he gives CPR to the victim, the police show up to take his statement, and in a panic he tells a lie that changes his life forever. Wilkinson will play lead investigator Carl Summer. Production gets underway in late October or early November with Matthew Saville directing.
