Beyonce exits Clint Eastwood's 'A Star is Born'; plus my pick to replace her

And the problems continue for Clint Eastwood's eternally-developing remake of A Star Is Born. The film has faced nothing but delays, first starting with an inability to find a male lead despite every top name in Hollywood being up for it. Other than the director, the one relatively stable component has been Beyonce, and now they don't even have her as she's just dropped out of the project.

Looks like it's back to square one for Warner Bros., who remain high on seeing the beloved musical romance adapted for the first time since the 1976 version. Their first goal is to figure out who will take on the role of the fading leading man, last played by Kris Kristofferson. Most recently Bradley Cooper's name was floated as a possibility, although Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and Christian Bale have all been approached.

Beyonce might actually be doing the studio and Eastwood a favor by dropping out. She caused some pretty significant delays when she took a hiatus to have a baby, and with her current schedule there was no way she'd have time to fit the film in. Eastwood has mentioned  the possibility of signing awesome jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding in her place, but nothing really seems concrete about anything at this point.

If I had my choice to replace her I'd shoot for Carmen Ejogo, who showed in Sparkle that she's got the style and vocal talent to pull it off. She's deserving of a big break like this, so WB let's make it happen! [Variety]
