* It's the old generation meets the sorta new, I guess. Shirley MacLaine, coming off a fantastic performance in Bernie earlier this year, is in talks to join Melissa McCarthy in her road trip comedy, Tammy. Written by McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, the story follows the titular character who has just lost her job at Hardee's and embarks on a cross-country road trip with her vulgar, alcoholic grandmother. Obviously MacLaine would play the latter, and paired up with McCarthy this is almost guaranteed to be a lot of fun. They still need to find a director, though, as SNL vet Beth McCarthy-Miller has dropped out. [THR]
* We're going to be talking a lot about Spike Lee for awhile, and it won't all be about how awful Red Hook Summer was. With his Michael Jackson documentary Bad 25 out in theaters today, then hitting the small screen next month, we now know when to expect his remake of Park Chan-Wook's Oldboy. FilmDistrict will release the anticipated film on October 11th 2013. Starring Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley, Elisabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, and the newly added James Ransone, the film centers on a man who is held captive for twenty years in a hotel room by an unknown captor, only to be released suddenly and embarking on a quest for vengeance. * Marti Noxon, a writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and last year's unappreciated Fright Night remake, has joined Pixar on a mystery project. The news broke during the Austin Film Festival, revealed by a senior exec with the studio. We don't know any details yet, but this has to be something major and worth keeping a close watch on. It's also a pretty smooth move for Pixar in the wake of the response to their treatment of Brenda Chapman, who was unceremoniously dumped as the director of Brave.
