Christopher McQuarrie may direct next 'Mission: Impossible'

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are pretty much inseparable now. McQuarrie, who struggled a little bit after his acclaimed script for The Usual Suspects, made his big comeback a few years ago with the Cruise-led historical pic, Valkyrie. Ever since he's been a part of practically everything Cruise has done, from Knight & Day to Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol to directing him in next month's Jack Reacher.

Now Deadline reports that McQuarrie is the top pick by Paramount, producer J.J. Abrams, and Cruise to direct Mission: Impossible 5. The studio seems happy enough with McQuarrie that they recently signed him to direct Without Remorse, a spinoff of their Jack Ryan franchise. But Mission: Impossible is the centerpiece series for them, so even considering McQuarrie for the job shows they must have a lot of confidence. That also means they must be really excited over how Jack Reacher turned out.

This one's still very early, as there are no writers attached, nor do we know when shooting would begin. Paramount will probably want to capitalize on the last film's success and make it top priority, which could mean Without Remorse is off the table. I like McQuarrie as a writer, but as a director he's an unknown commodity. The Way of the Gun was solid but forgettable, and the jury's still out on Jack Reacher.
