Angelina Jolie to direct WWII drama 'Unbroken'
Angelina Jolie made her impressive directorial debut late last year with In the Land of Blood and Honey, an ambitious wartorn romance that I unfortunately feel has been mostly forgotten. It showed a lot of promise for this new phase of her career, and while she's moved on to more acting gigs we hadn't heard much about how she would follow it up. Until now that is, and as it turns out she won't have to change her mindset all that much.
Jolie has signed on to direct Unbroken, a film which was one of Francis Lawrence's many projects until he got busy by taking on The Hunger Games movies. Based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand(Seabiscuit), the WWII-era film tells the inspiring true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympian who was captured by the Japanese and suffered incredible cruelty at a POW camp. He became the favorite target of sadistic torturer Matsuhiro Watanabe, and was savagely beaten and experimented on for more than three years until the war's end. Afterwards, Zamperini suffered from PTSD and became an alcoholic, but sought to turn his life around, getting married and ultimately forgiving those who abused him.
Richard LaGravanese(Beautiful Creatures) wrote the initial screenplay, followed up by William Nicholson(Les Miserables). Jolie will take a crack at it herself before production begins next year. I think this is a great move, and am anxious to see how she handles a much larger film than 'Blood and Honey' was.[Deadline]
