The Scary Movie franchise has been pretty awful since....well, since after the first film way back in 2000. Yeah, 2000. Once under the Wayans Family umbrella of comedy parodies, they've since been hijacked by spoof veteran David Zucker who has kept the money train going, with 2006's Scary Movie 4 raking in over $170M. After a lengthy seven year hiatus, including a delay as Dimension Films seemingly forgot the film was supposed to come out last year, Scary Movie 5 is right around the corner and the first trailer finally here.
Trafficking in reality TV stars and paparazzi-fodder like Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen, the film looks like it's trying desperately hard to make up for the loss of Anna Faris, who apparently had better things to do. Ashley Tisdale fills the dopey wide-eyed protagonist this time in what is primarly a spoof of Black Swan and including gags poking fun at Paranormal Activity, Inception, and more. Sheen and Simon Rex are pretty much the only returning faces, with new additions Erica Ash, Terry Crews, Mike Tyson, Katt Williams, and more. The gags are kind of stale, and overall this looks like a franchise that has run its course.
Scary Movie 5 is directed by Malcolm Lee and opens on April 12th.
