Zachary Levi and Jim Sturgess frontrunners to lead Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Is it possible that Jim Sturgess' heroic performance in Cloud Atlas was just the warm up to something bigger? He's not the sort of actor we think of as an action hero, but he was convincing enough in the Wachowskis' film he may have earned himself the most sought-after role in Hollywood right now. Variety is reporting Sturgess is among the frontrunners to play Star-Lord in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

A shortlist emerged about a month ago that featured a who's who of the hottest actors around, but the only one to survive the screen testing was Sturgess. The other name revealed to be a finalist is Zachary Levi, who came into Marvel's orbit replacing Josh Dallas as Fandral in Thor: The Dark World. Clearly they're impressed enough by him to even consider putting the headlining role of a major franchise on his relatively untested shoulders. There's still one unknown actor who is expected to test after the holidays, so Marvel is still weighing their options.

Levi's experience on Chuck could make him a solid pick for 'Guardians' quirkier tone, but Sturgess is a great actor who could really elevate this film to another level. My money's on Sturgess.  James Gunn is directing Guardians of the Galaxy for release on August 1st 2014.
