First trailer for 'The Place Beyond the Pines' with Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper

Whoever says that the early months of every year are always full of the worst movies obviously hasn't been paying that much attention lately. We can always count on a few gems that emerge out of nowhere to become both critical and audience darlings, and the film I think may do it next year is Derek Cianfrance's generational crime drama, The Place Beyond the Pines.

Reuniting with his Blue Valentine star, Cianfrance casts a rather rugged-looking Ryan Gosling as Luke, a stunt cyclist who turns learns suddenly that he's a father. "Who's that guy?" Turning to bank robbery to help support his son, he runs afoul of a determined cop played by Bradley Cooper, sparking a feud that spans decades. It looks like another excellent turn by Cooper, and Gosling seems to be settling into the tough and vulnerable groove quite nicely. The rest of the cast is strong with Eva Mendes, Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, and Rose Byrne making appearances, along with Ben Mendelsohn looking like he just walked off the Killing Them Softly set.

The Place Beyond the Pines opens on March 29th 2013. Check out the trailer below....
