J.J. Abrams said no to 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

After a dizzying amount of Star Wars Episode VII rumors, it's slowed down considerably of late. So let's get to some good old fashioned fact on the subject for once. In the latest issue of Empire during an interview on Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams revealed he was in some early talks about taking over the upcoming trilogy, but turned it down for various reasons, all of which make sense to me....

Abrams: "I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead! I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands."

And as for being offered the job....

Abrams: "there were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

We may find out who gets the job some time next month, and there's this sinking feeling in me that we'll end up with Jon Favreau. He's a Disney guy, knows big franchises, and his movies make money. That's a combination pretty tough to ignore.
