New trailer for 'Broken City' starring Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg

It's amazing how a single cut of a trailer can change one's perspective on a film. Broken City, the upcoming political thriller from Allen Hughes(Menace II Society) promised us the chance to see Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg in a testosterone-fueled showdown. We're used to seeing Wahlberg in these sorts of gritty, early year crime pics like Contraband, but this appeared to be much more than that, fast-paced and with a touch of film noir atmosphere.

Now the second trailer has been released, and while it's barely over a minute in length, it manages to strip away the mood that made it look promising to begin with. Instead we get mostly Wahlberg beating people up and taking down bad guys after being double-crossed by Crowe. Wahlberg plays an investigator hired by the mayor of New York City to investigate his wife's alledged affair, only to find out that he's been set up to take the fall for something terrible.

My enthusiasm's taken a mighty blow, but the cast, which also includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kyle Chandler, and Jeffrey Wright, is too good to be ignored. Broken City opens next year on January 18th...
