New 'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer amps up the melancholia

Well, get ready to be depressed. The new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer is amazing ... and also suggests at some heartbreaking, melancholy shit. If you were lucky enough to see nine minutes of the movie before IMAX screenings of The Hobbit this weekend, be aware of my neverending jealousy. But for the rest of us normal people, this second teaser for Star Trek Into Darkness is very interesting indeed.

What are the differences from the first trailer, which was released earlier this month? Well, that one introduced us to a new evildoer played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose extremely deep voice and creepy vibes made me think to myself, "This badass should read me bedtime stories. Every. Night." And we also got a glimpse of Alice Eve, presumably as Kirk's (Chris Pine) new love interest, and an island covered in coral plant stuff, and then a ship in some water, and civilians looking terrified. Benedict Cumberbatch is going to kill you all, guys! Get ready.

This time around, though, it's not just civilians who are in danger - it's everyone in Starfleet, everyone affiliated with Kirk, any person he might even care remotely about. We have narration from Kirk's mentor Pike (Bruce Greenwood), who warns Kirk over some Enya-like women's singing, "There's greatness in you, but not an ounce of humility. But there's going to come a moment when you're wrong about that. And you're going to get yourself, and everyone under your command, killed." And then we see a bunch of Starfleet coffins (in an image very reminiscent of a similar scene in Skyfall). And then Benedict Cumberbatch says more creepy stuff - "You think you're safe. You are not. ... Is there anything you would not do for your family?" - and people jumping off buildings and ships crashing and dramatic running and random screaming and AHHH just watch it already.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17, 2013. For the trailer, click through!
