The Sunday Drive 12/30/12
3. The Impossible
Naomi Watts shines in a harrowing and touching human drama about a family's struggle to survive the 2004 tsunami in Southern Asia. A compelling story that only occasionally misfires, J.A. Bayona's sharp direction and visual dynamism mark him as one of today's brightest filmmakers.
2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Peter Jackson welcomes us back into the comfortable warmth of Middle Earth, where a new and rousing adventure trilogy awaits. The Hobbit kicks his prequel off in exciting, light-hearted fashion, Jackson's enthusiasm leaping in bounds through every frame. Visually stunning and crystal clear in 48fps, while it takes some getting used to the end result is well worth the wait, as Tolkien's magical world has never looked better.
1. Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino unloads both barrels at slavery with his controversial and challenging blaxploitation/spaghetti Western. Hyper-violent with the director's brash sense of humor, Django Unchained is another stylish addition to the director's impressive resume.
DVD Pick of the Week: Looper
Through his first two films Rian Johnson has established himself as the go-to guy for freshening up stale genres, and he does it yet again for science-fiction with Looper. A thought-provoking, action-packed thrillride unlike anything else we saw all year, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis in a mind-bending time travel tale full of unexpected twists and turns.
