Tops at the Box Office: 'The Hobbit' scores biggest December opening in history
1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey- $84.7M
It was difficult to gauge just how big The Hobbit would be this time around. Despite the Lord of the Rings trilogy being loved by most people, prequels have a mixed track record critically and at the box office. The reviews for the film were solid but hardly great, and it had been a bit of time since the last film. But apparently those issues didn't matter a whit, because Peter Jackson has managed to best outdo expectations, with The Hobbit's $84.7M debut the largest in December history, beating out I Am Legend's $77M. These numbers are a little bit inflated due to 3D and IMAX showings, but the 'A' Cinemascore means audiences loved it, and if it falls in line with earlier films then expect plenty of repeat viewers. Throw in another $57M overseas and The Hobbit has wrapped up a tidy $141.7M. Not too shabby, and bodes pretty well for the rest of the trilogy.
2. Rise of the Guardians- $7.4M/$71.3M
It's doing well on the foreign market, raising its total to $190M, so at least Dreamworks should be able to pull a small profit.
3. Lincoln- $7.2M/$107.9M
4. Skyfall- $7M/$272.3M
5. Life of Pi- $5.4M/$69.5M
6. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn pt. 2- $5.17M/$276.8M
7. Wreck-It Ralph- $3.3M/$168.8M
8. Playing for Keeps- $3.2M/$10.8M
9. Red Dawn- $2.4M/$40.9M
10. Silver Linings Playbook- $2.1M/$16.9M
The strongest hold of the week by far went to David O. Russell's quirky comedy, slipping only 4% in its 371 theaters. Don't be surprised if we see this one expand to more theaters as we inch closer to awards season.
