Even though Gemma Arterton's role in Stephen Frear's adaptation of Posy Simmonds' Tamara Drewe didn't exactly earn the best reviews of her career, the actress is clearly a fan of the writer's work. Coco Before Chanel director Anne Fontaine confirmed to Allocine that her next film will be a big screen version of Simmond's graphic novel, Gemma Bovery, and that Arterton will be taking on the lead role.
French actor Fabrice Luchini went on to confirm it, saying he was up for a role opposite Arterton, who he refers to as a "British atomic bomb". The story is an overt reimagining of Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary, and follows the titular character's last few months living in Normandy with her husband. She soon becomes bored and engages in a number of affairs, her life a parallel to the lead in Flaubert's story.
Production begins this summer, so we should see the film some time in 2014. Arterton, who recently starred in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, will be seen this June in Neil Jordan's vampire drama, Byzantium. Fontaine's next film is Two Mothers, an erotic drama with Naomi Watts and Robin Wright.
