If there's another 'Ghost Rider' film, it won't be with Nicolas Cage

There have been two Ghost Rider movies thus far, and neither was especially well-received. The first one starred Nicolas Cage as the flame-headed biker/superhero, and it made a reasonable $220M even though nobody really dug it. Cage came back for the recent sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which brought in the Crank duo of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor to give it a shot of much-needed adrenaline. Still, nobody really cared and the movie did worse. It sounds like after two straight failures, Cage is ready to just move on.

While doing press for The Croods, Cage was asked about another Ghost Rider film, and said that it could happen, but he doesn't intend on being a part of it....

Cage: "I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved. Personally, I’m done. I’ve done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I’m done."

Could a reboot be in order? Sony still holds the Ghost Rider rights, and it'll be interesting to see where they go with it. They pushed 'Spirit of Vengeance' into production fairly quickly because they needed to make another film to retain the licensing rights, otherwise the character reverts back to Marvel. It's no different than what 20th Century Fox went through with Daredevil, and Lionsgate with The Punisher, as both of those heroes are now under Marvel's umbrella.

My gut tells me Sony will give it one more shot to see if they can make Ghost Rider work with a different actor. Maybe they should consider having him cameo in Spider-Man? [MTV]
