'Safety Not Guaranteed' director Colin Trevorrow to helm 'Jurassic Park 4'

It wasn't that long ago that Colin Trevorrow was a total unknown quantity, and then he floored many with his inventive sci-fi/romance Safety Not Guaranteed. For weeks his name was all over the Internet as the popular pick to direct Disney's Star Wars: Episode VII. Those rumors didn't pan out, and he ended up taking on a Flight of the Navigator remake instead. As far as massive, blockbuster sequels go, Trevorrow will still get his shot at one, only this will feature velociraptors rather than Jedi Knights.

Universal Pictures has tapped Trevorrow to direct Jurassic Park 4, quieting some who earlier today had Steven Spielberg stepping behind the camera himself. Spielberg will produce, and the long-awaited sequel will include a script by Rise of the Planet of the Apes duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Is it possible this is the film Trevorrow really meant when he hinted at the possibility of taking on a major project with a deep "mythology" to it? Jurassic Park would certainly fit the bill better than 'Navigator'. The pressure is going to be on no matter what, as this is a project that fans will be scrutinizing from start to finish. Safety Not Guaranteed showed what Trevorrow could do with limited resources, so it will be interesting to see what he does with significantly more.

Expect to hear more on casting soon as production gears up for release on June 13th 2014.
