Pegged by many as a future star, Luke Evans has seen franchise films drawn to him like a magnet. Making his first big appearance as Apollo in Clash of the Titans, he went on to star in Tarsem Singh's Immortals and Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers. While neither was what one would call a critical favorite, Evans was impressive enough to land the villain role in Fast & Furious 6, and take on the coveted role of Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit trilogy. Now he's just secured a major tentpole to call his own by taking the title role in F. Javier Gutierrez's The Crow reboot.
Relativity Media has been trying to get this production rolling for years, with Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper circling it early on, not to mention a handful of directors before Gutierrez became attached last year. Tom Hiddleston, James McAvoy, and Alexander Skarsgard were said to be in the mix until recently, but Evans was apparently always Gutierrez's first choice. But with his schedule on Dracula: Year Zero and the next 'Hobbit' film, the scheduling couldn't be worked out. So Relativity simply decided to put production on hold to fit Evans' schedule, sealing the deal in the process.
The Crow is based on the James O'Barr graphic novel about a murdered rocker named Eric Draven, who comes back from the dead to get revenge on those who killed him and his fiancé. The original film, directed by Alex Proyas, has become a cult classic mostly due to the lead performance by Brandon Lee, who would die on set under mysterious circumstances. [Deadline]
