Joe Wright apparently not in the mix to direct 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

Last week a story emerged placing Hanna and Atonement director Joe Wright at the top of the list to direct Fifty Shades of Grey, but Deadline have come along and said that isn't going to happen. The site suggests that Wright was never really in the mix at all, and that throws the other names mentioned, Patty Jenkins and Bennett Miller, into question.

Scheduling issues are said to be the reason Wright won't be able to fit the sought-after gig onto his agenda, meaning that Focus Features and Universal will have to begin their search elsewhere. The script by Kelly Marcel is in, and so is the steamy test pitch sent in by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) featuring Alex Pettyfer. At this point it's not even clear if producers are looking at Sant as a genuine candidate, as the test reel caused such an Internet stir many thought he and Pettyfer were already on board.

So add this to the growing pile of Fifty Shades of Grey rumors that never came to be. Whoever does ultimately win the job is going to have a rabid base of fans who are going to be very vocal about the film's production.
