Quirky and lovely trailer for Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 'The Young and Prodigious Spivet'
He'll probably forever be known (or not known, as it were) as the Alien franchise's most obscure director, having helmed 1997's Alien Resurrection. That was the French filmmaker's English-language debut, and while it was a mildly successful entry, he's had better luck when his native films have crossed onto our shores, such as his two hits with Audrey Tautou; Amelie and A Very Long Engagement. Now Jeunet is heading back to America for his next film, The Young And Prodigious Spivet, and it looks positively charming.
Starring Helena Bonham Carter and newcomer Kyle Catlett, the story centers on a brilliant 12-year old boy who goes on a magical journey around the countryafter being invited to the Smithsonian. There are shades of Tim Burton all over, from the quirky characters to the slightly off-kilter landscapes. Even the protagonist seems like a classic Burton character. And yet the romantic, surreal quality clearly mark this as a Jeunet film. This should look incredible in 3D as Jeunet intended.
There's no release date yet, but hopefully that will change after it makes the festival rounds.
