Watch the haunting trailer for 'Fruitvale Station' starring Michael B. Jordan
The Weinstein Company put in a fierce bidding effort at this year's Sundance to acquire the rights to Fruitvale Station (then just Fruitvale), and for very good reason. The film received arguably the best critical response after it premiered, and after it took home both the Grand Jury and Audience Dramatic awards at the festival, it was looking like a surefire investment. But more than that, the reviews for fast-rising star Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) were out of this world, with some foreseeing Oscar gold in his near future. Now the first trailer for Fruitvale Station is here to give you a glimpse at what all of the fuss was about.
Written and directed by newcomer Ryan Coogler, the film follows the last day in the life of Oscar Grant, a 22-year old San Francisco father who on New Year's Day 2009 was fatally shot and killed by BART police officers while in custody. The killing became a national scandal, but it's become an even bigger story thanks to the attention the film has received. Co-starring one of my personal favorite actresses in Melonie Diaz, along with Octavia Spencer, Ahna O'Reilly, Kevin Durand, and Chad Michael Murray, it looks like Weinstein has another winner on their hands.
Originally slotted for the fall, it's since been moved to July 12th where it may get lost in the summer shuffle, but you can bet Weinstein is going to put the power of their marketing muscle behind this one.
