Cillian Murphy Joins Ron Howard's 'In The Heart Of The Sea'

For whatever reason, Hollywood has never really perceived Cillian Murphy as a leading man, despite his proving on multiple occasions capable of bearing the load. Be that as it may, he's still a very special character actor who makes every movie he's in better. That bodes well for Ron Howard's adaptation of In the Heart of the Sea, because Murphy is the latest crewman to sign on.

Nathaniel Philbrick's book chronicles an event that inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick, the 1820 sinking of the whaling vessel Essex after it was attacked by a sperm whale. Benjamin Walker plays Captain Pollard, with Chris Hemsworth as his first mate, Owen Chase. Murphy is taking on the role of second mate Matthew Joy, who joins with Chase in convincing the Captain to set sail for South America, where the few remaining crew were forced to turn to cannibalism to survive the 90-day ordeal.

Murphy is currently filming Wally Pfister's Transcendence, but he should be done before shooting on In the Heart of the Sea begins this fall. [Deadline]
