First Poster for 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'

The teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit the web on Tuesday June 11th, and will appear in front of Man of Steel when it opens on the 14th, but before that Warner Bros. has unveiled the first official poster. The image appears to show Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) at the entrance to The Lonely Mountain, which houses the dragon Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

It remains to be seen how Peter Jackson intends to fill out the final two chapters of the trilogy. The title of this film pretty much gives away what to expect, but J.R.R. Tolkien's novel is fairly thin up to that point and beyond. It's expected that the final chapter, There and Back Again, will be made up mostly of the appendices to The Lord of the Rings, chronicling the rise of the Necromancer and expanding on some of Gandalf's mysterious side quests.

Also starring Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Ian McKellen, Luke Evans, and more, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in 3D on December 13th.
